August 1998 - On-line Edition

Fun-In-The-Sun Continues

Cheat Lake Rendezvous - August 15

Our next Mountaineer Rendezvous will be at Edgewater Marina on Saturday, August 15. Scheduled activities are set to begin at 1400. If you bring a boat, launch at the free boat ramp at Sunset Beach. The squadron will provide hot dogs or other meat entrée, and it is suggested that members bring a covered dish and drinks.

September Squadron Meeting - Tuesday - 8 September

Our September dinner and program will be at Two Rivers Campground and Marina. It is on the Monongahela River just north of Point Marion, off Route 88.

If you launch your boat for this gathering, you might leave it in the water for Mason-Dixon Festival.

Mason-Dixon Festival - September 11-13, 1998

The 1998 Mason Dixon Festival will be held at Hazel Ruby McClain Riverfront Park in Morgantown. There is no admission charge. Boaters are particularly welcome, and you can tie up overnight, perhaps even to a dock. There will be no trailer parking, so use the Star City boat ramp.

Saturday morning there will be a River Parade. "Big" boats should gather at the Star City boat ramp at about 1030. Slow or cumbersome floating objects can assemble at the Mon Rowing Club next to General Woodworking.

No advance registration is required, but if you are coming, give Wally Venable a call. If several Mountaineer Power Squadron crews will attend, we might schedule something special like a maneuvering contest

Food, boating, and "catching rays" at our Tygart Lake Rendezvous in July.

Cdr Thomas W. Martin, AP

Another outstanding rendezvous at Tygart Lake was hosted by Alan and Cathleen. Everything was perfect; the food, boating, swimming, sailing, Jet Ski rides, and even the weather. Everyone had a good time and I would like to thank Alan and Cathleen for their hospitality and all the hard work preparing for the event.

Ray and Susan Derk brought two sail boats and even though the wind was light managed to give some sailing instructions and rides

The next picnic will be at Cheat Lake , 15 August. We will cook-out on the deck at Edgewater Marina at 1400. Food will be provided, you may bring a covered dish and drinks. Come for the weekend and bring your boat or come for the day.

This will be the last outing of the summer. I would like to see everyone attend this function. Come and have fun swimming, boating, eating, or relaxing with friends or just sit in the hot tub.

Lt/C Alan Smith, JN

Basic class plans are being finalized for fall. We will be teaching the Boat Smart course over a four week period.

The Bridgeport class will be held at Petroleum Development Corporation's office at 103 East Main St. on 18 September at 1900.

The Morgantown class will be held at the old Sabraton School on 8 October at 1900.

The Fairmont class will be held at the YWCA on Pleasant Valley road on 7 November at 1900. Anyone with any interest in helping please let the Education Department know.

The seven students in the JN class are working on their sights and exams.

We are planning to starting an N class in late September. The Marine Electronics class along with Seamanship and Piloting still need to be set up. Anyone interested in these should let the education department know.

Fond Memories

I talked to Doris Kelly yesterday,

We talked of our dear Power Squadron folk,

And their last interesting getaway.

We laughed at some old silly sailing joke,

Commented on all Power Squadron News,

The editor waiting for my new work,

The annual summer picnic brings it dues

Of many fond memories, quite a perk!

Then talk turns to water craft and old boats,

Commiserate about the days long past,

And then interject quite a few choice quotes,

For Power Squadron talk is truly vast.

And we both love those lovely folks we know

And miss the monthly Power Squadron show!

The SS Minnow is the latest addition to the Mountaineer fleet. Lt. Jeff Stalnaker, JN is buying it from Lt/Cdr Alan Smith, JN, and the two of them are refitting the boat. She is a 1960's Larson 18 foot cuddy cabin boat. A real fiberglass classic, she's big enough to sleep on and small enough to trailer easily.

Eight members of Mountaineer Power Squadron attended the District 7 rendezvous at Oakmont Yacht Club in July. D/7 Administrative Officer Joseph Silbaugh, N and P/R/C Charlotte Silbaugh, N, P/C Robert Leeper, S and Jean Leeper, Lloyd Keller, and Karen Keller, and P/C Wallace Venable, AP and Norma Venable, P comprised the list.

The Leepers and Kellers traveled from Star City on the Lady and Lord, and would have won the trophy for "longest distance by boat" if there had been one. The Venables traveled on their boat SnoGoose.

Oakmont Yacht Club is said to be the oldest yacht club in the middle of the United States. They provided good meals, docks, and showers. Pittsburgh Power Squadron organized the Saturday "Poker Run" which took all attendees to several sites along a five mile stretch of the Allegheny River.
